Shaving Cream Backgrounds

Any type of re-inker is suitable for the shaving cream technique. I usually prefer regular dye re-inkers because they are less expensive than other types.  This time, I was using K-pad refills for a greater variety of colors. 

Normally I work up this technique onto white cardstock. I became adventurous this time and dipped a blue/grey piece of cardstock and then some hot pink into the marble colored shaving cream.  I liked the results and will have to play some more with other cardstock colors.  While the project scans display interesting patterns, you will find that the colors are more dynamic when working with the real thing.  Enjoy the experience! 

Supplies:

• Caribbean Kaleidacolor Pad (Tsukineko ~ TAC)
• Re-inkers for Kaleidacolor Pads (Tsukineko ~ TAC)
• Black Noir Palette Hybrid Ink (Stewart Superior ~ TAC)
• VersaMark ink pad (Tsukineko ~ TAC)
• Black Sparkle Embossing Powder (unknown)
• Prismacolor Colored Pencils (Sanford ~ TAC)
• Purple cardstock; ¼ Sheet measuring 5½” x 4¼” (TAC)
• White cardstock; ½ Sheet trimmed (5¼” x 8”)
• 3½” x 3½” Piece Purple cardstock (TAC)
• 3” x 3” Piece White cardstock (TAC)
• Shaving Cream (Barbasol)
• Paint Guide (Wal-Mart) {works much better than a ruler}
• Regular ol’ butter knife (dedicated to shaving cream)
• Mono Adhesive (Tombow)
• Southwest Corner Punch (Marvy ~ TAC)
• LOTS of paper towels (Bounty)

INSTRUCTIONS 

1.    Create a “pile” of shaving cream about the size of a dessert plate. When you purchase the shaving cream, make sure it doesn’t have a scent. If it has a lot of fragrance, you will get sick of it really fast. LOL!

2.    Pick one, two or three complimentary colors of re-inkers. Place about 3 drops of each color (when using 3 colors) into the pile of shaving cream.  I start with just one color and later add more.

3.    Take a butter knife (or some thin straight edge) and “cut” through the ink & shaving cream making swirls. In my humble opinion, I like to see lots of lines of color versus big blobs of color.  You do not want to fold in the color. 

4.    Take a quarter sheet of plain white cardstock (4¼” x 5½”) and lay on top of the colored pile of shaving cream. Smoosh it into the pile starting in the middle of the cardstock working out to the edges.  By starting in the middle, you won’t have an air pocket so that the cardstock misses the colored shaving cream.

5.    Pick up cardstock by one corner placing dry side down on moisture resistant work surface (place mat).  Take paint guide and remove shaving cream from cardstock returning it to the original pile.  Use a paper towel to wipe the cardstock dry (front and back sides). Set aside to let dry. When dry, place under a weight to flatten the cardstock.

6.    Using the butter knife, cut the color into the shaving cream again.  You might want to add more color now or later into this same pile of shaving cream. 

7.    When colored cardstock is dry and flat, attach it to the folded piece of white cardstock and then trim.  When you attach it, be sure to match up the fold line with a straight edge. It is hard to trim this side but easy to trim the other 3 sides.  Also, it seems to work better by applying the adhesive to the folded piece of cardstock rather than the piece colored with shaving cream. 

8.    Mount on quarter sheet of coordinating colored cardstock using Mono Adhesive.

9.    Stamp image and/or saying of your choice using Black Noir Palette Ink Pad on small white square. Layer this onto ½” larger square of purple cardstock. This can match or just coordinate with the colored back cardstock. Attach to card front with Mono Adhesive. You can also trim around the stamped image and mat before.

10. Stamp saying of your choice inside.
